Oxnard, CA (January 18, 2025) – A tragic DUI-related crash in Oxnard claimed the life of 35-year-old Zenglong Wang.
Accident Details: The collision occurred around 9:45 p.m. when a Nissan Cube traveling north on Victoria broadsided a Toyota Sienna van as it crossed the intersection of Victoria and Doris Avenues. According to the Oxnard Police Department’s preliminary investigation, the driver of the Nissan, a 19-year-old Oxnard resident, showed signs of alcohol intoxication and was arrested at the scene. Speed is also believed to have been a contributing factor.
Zenglong Wang, a passenger in the Toyota Sienna, suffered critical injuries and was transported to Ventura County Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Toyota, a 55-year-old Oxnard resident, sustained significant injuries and remains hospitalized. The driver of the Nissan sustained minor injuries and received treatment at a local hospital before being taken into custody. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that this tragic case raises important legal and investigative questions regarding liability and accountability. Here are some key aspects investigators and attorneys will examine:
- Alcohol Intoxication and Driver Negligence: Driving under the influence of alcohol is considered a grossly negligent act under California law, as it shows a disregard for the safety of others. The 19-year-old Nissan driver’s impairment constitutes a breach of the duty of care owed to other drivers and passengers. By operating a vehicle while impaired, the driver knowingly endangered others.
- Speed as a Contributing Factor: Speeding also demonstrates a failure to exercise reasonable care and increases the risk of serious injury or death to others on the road.
- Intersection Safety and Right-of-Way: Was the Toyota Sienna lawfully crossing the intersection when the collision occurred? Investigators will analyze traffic signals, right-of-way rules, and potential violations by either party.
The family of Zenglong Wang may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the impaired driver. A claim could seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and the emotional suffering caused by his death. Similarly, the injured Toyota driver may be able to file a personal injury claim and recover damages for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Zenglong Wang during this challenging time. I wish the Toyota driver a fast recovery.
