Xavier Smith, 17, Killed in Late-Night Collision with Tractor-Trailer in Delaware

Bear, Delaware (December 7, 2025) — Delaware State Police have identified Xavier Smith, a 17-year-old from the Newark area, as the teenager killed Sunday night in a two-vehicle crash on Bear Christiana Road. Smith died at the scene after his car collided with a tractor-trailer that was in the process of making a turn.

Incident Details: The crash occurred around 10:40 p.m. as Smith was driving a Ford Focus northbound on Bear Christiana Road approaching East Songsmith Drive. At the same time, a tractor-trailer pulling an unloaded car-hauler trailer was turning left from East Songsmith Drive onto southbound Bear Christiana Road, according to Delaware State Police.

Before the tractor-trailer completed its turn, Smith’s vehicle continued northbound and struck the car-hauler trailer. Emergency responders pronounced Smith dead at the scene. Police did not report any injuries to the tractor-trailer driver.

Investigation: Delaware State Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the collision. Investigators will closely examine the timing and geometry of the tractor-trailer’s left turn, including how far the trailer extended into the northbound lanes at the moment of impact.

In crashes involving long trailers, investigators often analyze visibility, lighting conditions, and whether the turning vehicle was adequately illuminated or reflective, particularly at night. They may review surveillance footage from nearby homes or businesses, evaluate the tractor-trailer’s speed and turning radius, and examine whether Smith had sufficient time or distance to perceive and react to the hazard.

Event data from Smith’s vehicle and the tractor-trailer, along with roadway evidence such as impact points and debris patterns, will help reconstruct the sequence of events. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward, underscoring the importance of witness accounts in clarifying what happened in the moments before impact.

Legal Considerations: Left-turn crashes involving tractor-trailers often raise difficult questions about right-of-way and the duty to yield. Under Delaware law, drivers making left turns must ensure the roadway is clear and that approaching traffic can safely pass before completing the maneuver. Because car-hauler trailers are long and can block multiple lanes, drivers must account for the extended time and space required to complete a turn safely.

For the family of Xavier Smith, a wrongful death claim may allow his family to seek accountability and compensation for funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and the profound loss of a son whose future was still unfolding. While no legal action can undo the tragedy, it can help families find answers and support during an unimaginably painful time.

My deepest condolences go out to the Smith family, friends, and loved ones as they mourn the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
