Wrong-Way DUI Crash in Yuba County Kills Francisca Monzono and Injures Others

Yuba County, CA (September 2, 2024) – On Monday, September 2, 2024, a tragic wrong-way accident occurred in Yuba County, leading to the death of 47-year-old Francisca Monzono of Elverta and leaving others injured.

Accident Details and Ongoing Investigation:  The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on the southbound McGowan off-ramp leading onto Highway 70. According to the CHP, 19-year-old Alannah Eastern of Elk Grove was driving a Buick sedan northbound on the southbound lanes of the highway. Eastern’s vehicle collided head-on with a silver Toyota driven by Monzono. Unfortunately, Monzono was pronounced dead at the scene, while her passenger was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

Eastern, who was also injured along with her passenger, was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. She was subsequently arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI causing injury. The CHP is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several critical areas require thorough investigation to determine liability and ensure justice for the victims. The inquiry will delve into Eastern’s blood alcohol content (BAC) at the time of the crash. The results of toxicology reports will be crucial in understanding the level of impairment and its contribution to the collision.

Driving under the influence (DUI) is a clear breach of the duty every driver has to operate their vehicle safely and responsibly. If deemed negligent, this breach of duty can form the basis for a wrongful death claim by the family of Francisca Monzono. A wrongful death lawsuit could seek compensation for the emotional and financial toll caused by Monzono’s untimely death, including funeral expenses, lost income, and the loss of companionship.

Additionally, the individuals injured in the crash, including the passenger in Monzono’s vehicle, may have grounds for personal injury claims. These claims can pursue damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other costs associated with the injuries sustained due to Eastern’s negligent actions.

My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Francisca Monzono during this incredibly difficult time. I also wish the injured individuals a full and swift recovery.
