Wrong-Way Collision in Apple Valley Claims the Life of Samantha Haun

Apple Valley, CA (December 23, 2024) – On Monday night, December 23, 2024, a tragic wrong-way crash involving an alleged drunk driver claimed the life of 30-year-old Samantha Haun on Highway 18 in Apple Valley.

Accident Details: According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred around 8 p.m. when Vicente Zuniga-Medina, 45, drove a blue 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander eastbound in the westbound lanes. His vehicle collided head-on with Haun’s car near Quinnault Road. Haun tragically died at the scene, while Zuniga-Medina suffered a broken foot and was taken to the hospital.

Investigation: Authorities confirmed Zuniga-Medina’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was .22%, nearly three times the legal limit. He has since been arrested and booked at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto on charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated with gross negligence.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Driving under the influence impairs a driver’s ability to make sound decisions and respond appropriately to road conditions. In this case, Vicente Zuniga-Medina’s choice to operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of .22% not only compromised his judgment but also led to his reckless decision to drive on the wrong side of the highway. This action demonstrated a blatant disregard for the safety of others, endangering every driver on the road.

Haun’s family may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such claims could seek compensation for funeral costs, loss of companionship, and other damages.

My sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of Samantha Haun as they face this profound loss.
