Wind Turbine Blade Crashes Into Traffic on Interstate 70 in Maryland

Hagerstown, MD (July 1, 2025) – A tractor-trailer hauling a wind turbine blade crashed early Monday on Interstate 70 in Washington County, causing the massive blade to slide across the median and into oncoming traffic. One person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Accident Details: The crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-70 near the I-81 interchange, when the truck reportedly struck a guardrail. The impact caused the turbine blade to dislodge from the trailer and slide into the eastbound lanes, where it was struck by another semi-truck. The collision temporarily blocked multiple lanes in both directions. Maryland State Police and highway crews responded to the scene and reopened all lanes by 8:28 a.m.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities are investigating whether improper load securement, driver error, or equipment malfunction played a role in the incident. In Maryland, commercial drivers are legally responsible for ensuring oversized loads are safely secured and transported. Injured parties in such incidents may be able to file personal injury claims depending on the outcome of the investigation.

I extend my sincere wishes for a full recovery to the individual injured in this unusual and dangerous crash.
