Clifton Park, New York (November 23, 2025) — A multi-vehicle crash on the Northway in Clifton Park claimed the life of William Reichman, a 71-year-old Ballston Lake resident, after he was struck by a tractor-trailer and additional vehicles, according to New York State Police.
Incident Details: The crash occurred around 8:10 p.m. Sunday near Exit 11 on the Northway. State Police said troopers responding to the scene determined that Reichman’s vehicle had been involved in collisions with two other vehicles and came to rest against a guardrail.
After exiting his vehicle, Reichman was struck by a southbound tractor-trailer. The impact caused him to fall into the roadway, where he was subsequently hit by two additional southbound vehicles. Reichman suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police reported that the tractor-trailer involved in the initial strike is believed to be white and sustained significant front-end damage. Authorities stated that the truck driver fled the scene following the collision. All other drivers involved remained at the scene and are cooperating with the investigation.
Investigation: New York State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. In incidents involving secondary impacts and pedestrians on high-speed highways, investigators typically focus on traffic flow, visibility, and whether drivers had sufficient opportunity to perceive and avoid a person in the roadway.
Investigators are expected to review physical evidence, including vehicle damage and debris patterns, to reconstruct the sequence of events. Identifying the tractor-trailer involved will be a central focus, with troopers asking for public assistance, including dashcam footage or witness accounts, to help locate the vehicle and its driver.
Legal Considerations: Crashes involving pedestrians and other motorists on interstate highways are particularly hazardous and often result in severe outcomes. From a civil perspective, determining liability may include evaluating the actions of multiple drivers, including whether the tractor-trailer driver exercised reasonable care and whether fleeing the scene contributed to the severity of the harm.
Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the family of William Reichman may consider pursuing a wrongful death claim to address funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and the emotional and financial impact of losing a family member. While no legal process can undo the tragedy, accountability can play a meaningful role in acknowledging what occurred.
I extend my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of William Reichman as they grieve this devastating loss.
