Keith County, NE (May 3, 2025) – A crash between two semi-trucks claimed the lives of both drivers late Saturday night on Interstate 80, just five miles west of Brule, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.
Accident Details: The collision occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. Investigators report that a westbound semi, driven by 31-year-old Sergen Tas of Jersey City, New Jersey, crossed the median and struck an oncoming eastbound semi driven by 41-year-old Lionel Grate of Conway, South Carolina. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Grate’s wife, a 38-year-old passenger in the eastbound truck, sustained injuries that were initially described as non-life-threatening. She was first transported to Ogallala Community Hospital and later airlifted to the University of Colorado Hospital for additional care.
The Nebraska State Patrol has stated that the crash remains under investigation.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Investigators will be working to determine what caused Tas’s semi to leave the westbound lanes and enter oncoming traffic. They will likely examine driver records and logs, potential fatigue or health issues, mechanical failure or tire blowouts, road conditions and visibility at the time, and data from electronic logging devices (ELDs) and vehicle GPS.
If the investigation determines that Tas was negligent, his employer may also face vicarious liability because trucking companies are often held responsible for the actions of their employee drivers.
Grate’s wife, as a surviving victim, may have grounds to pursue a personal injury claim. She and the Grate family may also have standing to file a wrongful death lawsuit for Lionel Grate’s death.
I extend my condolences to everyone affected by this tragic accident. I hope they find the strength to move forward.
