Two Killed in Head-On Collision in Fresno County

Fresno County, CA (January 12, 2025) – On Sunday, two men lost their lives in a tragic head-on crash on Highway 33 near Highway 198 in Fresno County. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Mark Villalvazo, 32, and Julio Mendez, 24, both residents of Coalinga.

Accident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Villalvazo was driving a Lexus northbound in the southbound lane at high speed. Julio Mendez was traveling southbound in a Honda sedan and could not avoid the wrong-way Lexus. The vehicles collided head-on. Mendez was ejected from his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Villalvazo’s car was engulfed in flames, trapping him inside. He was also declared dead at the scene.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Wrong-way accidents and traveling at high speeds often involve a breach of the duty to drive safely. Investigators will likely examine whether Villalvazo was impaired at the time of the crash. Additionally, investigators may investigate whether other factors contributed to the collision. For instance:

  • Was poor visibility or insufficient signage a factor in Villalvazo’s decision to drive in the wrong lane?
  • Were there any roadway design issues, such as unclear lane markings, that could have played a role?
  • Did Villalvazo’s vehicle suffer from a mechanical defect that caused him to travel in the wrong lane?

Julio Mendez’s family may have the option to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such claims can compensate for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and the profound emotional impact of losing a loved one. Depending on the investigation’s findings, Villalvazo’s family may also be able to file a claim if a third party is also found to be negligent.

My sincerest condolences are with all those affected by this tragedy. I hope they find peace and closure during this difficult time.
