Two Injured in Early Morning Collision With Dump Truck on Robert Crain Highway in Maryland

Bowie, Maryland (October 22, 2025) — Two people were hospitalized early Wednesday morning following a collision between a dump truck and a passenger car on Robert Crain Highway, according to the Maryland State Police (MSP).

Incident Details: The crash occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m. near the intersection of Sylvan Drive and Annapolis Road. Preliminary findings indicate that a Toyota Camry was slowing for traffic when it was rear-ended by a dump truck traveling in the same direction. The impact pushed the car forward while the dump truck veered off the road, striking a nearby light pole.

Both drivers sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The dump truck driver was airlifted to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, while the Camry’s driver was taken to a local medical center. The severity of their injuries remains unclear. Authorities closed several lanes along Robert Crain Highway for more than 24 hours while investigators examined the scene and crews worked to restore the damaged infrastructure.

Investigation: Maryland State Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Early evidence points to driver inattention or following too closely as potential contributing factors, which are common causes of rear-end collisions involving large commercial vehicles. Investigators will also review the truck’s speed at the time of impact and whether the Camry’s brake lights or hazard signals were clearly visible in pre-dawn lighting.

Because the vehicle involved was a commercial dump truck, investigators will review compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) standards, which require regular brake inspections and adherence to rest-hour regulations for operators. Mechanical failure or driver fatigue may have contributed to the truck’s inability to stop in time.

The Maryland State Police investigation will be critical in determining exactly how and why this crash occurred on Robert Crain Highway.

Legal Considerations: Collisions between heavy commercial trucks and smaller passenger cars frequently result in severe injuries due to the significant size and weight difference between vehicles. If investigators determine that the dump truck driver was negligent, by speeding, following too closely, or failing to maintain control, both the driver and the trucking company could be held civilly liable for damages under Maryland law.

The injured parties may pursue a truck accident claim to recover compensation for medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering. If the dump truck was operated by a contractor performing public work, liability could also extend to the company’s insurer or government agency responsible for overseeing its operations.

I wish both drivers a full and swift recovery following this serious early morning collision.
