Two Drivers Hospitalized After Dump Truck and SUV Collide on Route 29 in Illinois

South Pekin, Illinois (October 21, 2025) — Two drivers were hospitalized Tuesday afternoon following a collision between a dump truck and a sport utility vehicle at a busy intersection along Illinois Route 29.

Incident Details: Authorities said the crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 29 and Hurt Road, near Casey’s General Store in South Pekin. Responding deputies found both vehicles heavily damaged, with debris scattered across the roadway. Both drivers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, though their current conditions have not been released.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while investigators documented the scene, cleared wreckage, and worked to safely reopen traffic. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes during the closure.

Investigation: The Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports have not specified which vehicle had the right of way at the time of impact. Investigators are expected to review physical evidence from the scene, including skid marks and impact points, to determine whether one driver failed to yield while turning or entering the intersection.

Visibility, traffic flow, and potential mechanical issues with either vehicle will also be examined. Dump trucks, which carry significant weight even when empty, require longer braking distances and are more prone to tipping or jackknifing during sudden stops. Investigators may also review whether speed or distraction contributed to the collision.  Witness statements, vehicle electronic data, and other relevant information will be used to assess these possibilities.

Updates will be released as the investigation progresses.

Legal Considerations: Collisions involving dump trucks raise additional liability questions due to their commercial operation and maintenance requirements. If investigators find that the dump truck driver failed to maintain proper control or was operating in violation of safety standards, both the driver and the vehicle’s owner may be held liable for damages.

Injured drivers may be entitled to pursue a truck accident claim to recover compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Because dump trucks are often operated by municipalities or private contractors, determining ownership and insurance responsibility will be crucial in any potential civil action. Additionally, depending on severity, the SUV driver’s injuries may warrant an investigation into whether proper signage, lighting, or road design at the intersection played a role in the crash.

I extend my best wishes to injured drivers for a full and speedy recovery.
