Kansas City, KS (March 21, 2025) – A woman and her six-year-old child were seriously injured Friday morning when a semi-truck overturned onto their SUV on Interstate 635 in Kansas City, Kansas. The truck was hauling batteries at the time of the crash, officials said.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. on northbound I-635, just beyond the ramp from Interstate 70. According to police, the driver of the tractor-trailer lost control on the ramp, causing the truck to roll onto its side. It landed directly on top of a passing SUV.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies closed three lanes of I-635 and shut down the ramp from I-70 while they worked to free the victims and stabilize the scene. Fire crews had to cut open the SUV to extricate the woman from the wreckage.
Both the woman and the child were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Their names have not yet been released. The driver of the semi was not injured.
Legal Considerations: When a commercial truck overturns and crushes another vehicle, investigators will often examine the truck’s speed, load weight, and handling on ramps or curves. In this case, the fact that the truck was hauling batteries may raise questions about load stability and whether proper precautions were followed for hazardous cargo.
Authorities will likely analyze onboard data, driver logs, and maintenance records to determine what led to the crash. If evidence shows that the truck was traveling too fast for the ramp or that the load shifted dangerously, the woman and child’s family may have grounds for a legal claim.
Ongoing Investigation: Kansas City, KS police are still investigating the cause of the crash. No charges have been filed at this time. The truck remained on its side for several hours while crews worked to remove it and clear debris.
I hope both victims receive the medical care and support they need as they recover from this frightening ordeal.
