Madison County, KY (July 20, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 claimed the life of 16-year-old Tristen Brown on Sunday evening near the 84-mile marker.
Accident Details: The crash occurred just before 5:30 p.m. in a congested area of the highway, according to the Kentucky State Police (KSP), who are continuing to investigate the collision.
Authorities say the chain-reaction crash began when an international commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driven by David Turner rear-ended a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Rico Brown of Berea. The force of the impact sent Turner’s CMV into a guardrail and a 2024 Ford F-350 pulling a recreational vehicle, driven by Steven Wohlscheid. The Silverado was then pushed forward into the back of a 2021 Freightliner CMV operated by Justin Hill.
Rico Brown was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. A juvenile passenger in the Silverado, identified by the Madison County Coroner as Tristen Brown, age 16, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: This crash highlights the consequences that can result from collisions involving commercial motor vehicles. In multi-vehicle crashes of this nature, investigators will focus on:
- Vehicle speeds at the time of the crash;
- Following distances and traffic congestion;
- Driver attentiveness and braking behavior;
- Road and weather conditions;
- Vehicle maintenance, and
- Potential violations of federal trucking regulations.
Depending on the findings of the investigation, Tristen Brown’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Rico Brown may be able to file a personal injury claim for his injuries.
I extend my deepest condolences to Tristen Brown’s family and friends and wish Rico Brown a fast recovery.
