Tragic Pedestrian Accident Claims Life of Heidi Gangi in Wilmington

Wilmington, CA (July 31, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway in Wilmington, resulting in the death of 60-year-old Heidi Gangi.

Accident Details and Investigation: The collision occurred near the Anaheim Street exit around 9:14 p.m. when Gangi was struck by a white hatchback while walking in one of the freeway’s middle lanes. Emergency services, including the Los Angeles Fire Department, pronounced her dead at the scene. During their investigation, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) closed four lanes of the freeway and the Anaheim Street exit for several hours.

As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination.

Driver’s Responsibility: The investigators must examine the hatchback driver’s actions. Key questions include whether the driver was speeding, distracted, or under the influence of substances. The CHP’s investigation will be crucial in establishing these details.

Pedestrian Behavior: Understanding why Heidi Gangi was walking on the freeway is essential. Pedestrians are generally prohibited from walking on freeways, and any deviation from this norm might affect the determination of liability. Factors such as whether Gangi was in a crosswalk or if there were any signs indicating pedestrian access or restrictions will be reviewed.

Road Conditions and Signage: An assessment of the road conditions, including lighting and signage, is necessary. Inadequate lighting or missing signs could implicate the local municipality.

For the family of Heidi Gangi, seeking justice involves understanding the full scope of what happened and holding the responsible parties accountable. Depending on the outcome, they may be able to file a wrongful death claim. Even if Gangi shares some responsibility because she was walking in the middle of the freeway, her family may still be able to recover compensation based on California’s comparative negligence laws.

My sincerest condolences are with the family and friends of Heidi Gangi during this difficult time.
