Moreno Valley, CA (June 18, 2024) – On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, a tragic accident occurred on the westbound Moreno Valley (60) Freeway near Frederick Street, leading to the death of a 43-year-old pedestrian, Enrique Ruiz.
Accident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Ruiz walked into the first lane of the freeway and was struck by a truck. The reason why Ruiz was on the freeway remains unclear. The truck driver, who was not injured in the incident, pulled over to the shoulder and waited to provide his account to the CHP officers. Paramedics from the Riverside County Fire Department pronounced Ruiz dead at the scene.
Investigation: The accident is being investigated. The Riverside CHP urges anyone with information to contact them at 951-637-8000.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury lawyer, I find several factors warrant investigation in this case. The truck driver’s actions and the vehicle’s condition must be scrutinized. Was the driver adhering to speed limits and traffic regulations? Was there a possibility of distracted driving or fatigue? Additionally, an inspection of the truck for any mechanical issues that might have impaired the driver’s ability to avoid the collision is necessary. Assessing the freeway conditions at the time of the accident, including visibility, weather, and road signage, can help determine if external factors played a role. Adequate signage warning pedestrians against crossing the freeway and informing drivers of possible pedestrian presence could be a factor in preventing such tragedies. Any negligence may permit Ruiz’s family to file a wrongful death claim and recover compensation, including funeral expenses. It is dangerous for pedestrians to be near the freeway, so understanding why Ruiz was there is also essential.
I offer my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Enrique Ruiz during this difficult time.
