Westlake, CA (October 28, 2024) – Early Monday morning, a hit-and-run collision claimed the life of 15-year-old Joseph Rangel in Los Angeles’ Westlake neighborhood.
Accident Details: The accident happened around 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of Olympic Boulevard and Arapahoe Street. According to reports from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Joseph was riding a small motorized “pocket bike” north on Arapahoe Street when he lost control, sliding into the intersection. An eastbound vehicle on Olympic Boulevard struck him and left the scene without stopping to assist or provide identification. Joseph tragically died at the scene.
Investigation: Up to $50,000 in city reward money is available for anyone providing information that leads to the arrest of the driver involved. The LAPD West Traffic Division urges anyone with information to contact them or use Crime Stoppers’ anonymous tip lines.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant a closer analysis. California law imposes significant penalties on drivers who flee the scene of a fatal accident, highlighting the legal obligations of all drivers to remain at the scene and provide assistance. Failure to do so can amount to negligence. Rangel’s family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the driver, which could allow them to recover financial support should the driver be identified.
I offer my deepest condolences to Joseph Rangel’s family and friends during this difficult time.
