Blendon Township, MI (February 17, 2026) – Toni Laws (59) was killed, and David Laws (56) was seriously injured when a semi-truck crashed into their vehicle after missing a stop sign in Blendon Township.
Incident Details: On February 17, 2026, around 5:20 a.m., a crash occurred at the intersection of Port Sheldon Street and 72nd Avenue in Blendon Township.
A semi-truck was driving northbound on 72nd Avenue when the driver missed the stop sign at Port Sheldon Street. According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, he crashed the semi-truck into the passenger side of a GMC Sierra that was traveling eastbound.
The GMC Sierra passenger, Toni Laws, died at the scene. The GMC driver, David Laws, is still being treated for serious injuries at a Grand Rapids hospital.
The semi-truck driver has not yet been named.
Investigation: The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the fatal crash at Port Sheldon Street and 72nd Avenue in Blendon Township. Because reports indicate the semi-truck driver missed a stop sign before colliding with the GMC Sierra, investigators will closely examine right-of-way violations, visibility at the intersection, and whether speed or distraction contributed to the failure to stop.
Authorities will likely review skid marks, vehicle damage, and any available dash camera or nearby surveillance footage. In crashes involving commercial vehicles, investigators may also examine driver logs, hours-of-service compliance, vehicle maintenance records, and possible mechanical issues to determine whether additional safety violations played a role.
Legal Considerations: If the investigation confirms that the semi-truck driver failed to obey the stop sign and caused the crash, liability could extend beyond the driver to the trucking company, depending on employment status, training, and safety compliance. Commercial trucking cases often involve multiple layers of responsibility, including company policies and federal safety regulations.
Toni Laws’ surviving family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim to recover funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and loss of companionship. David Laws may also have a personal injury claim for his medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering resulting from his serious injuries.
My deepest condolences go out to the Laws family as they mourn the loss of Toni, and I wish David strength and a full recovery as he continues to receive treatment.
