Phelan, CA (April 14, 2024) – A devastating head-on collision on Phelan Road claimed the lives of two drivers, including Tommy Solis, 27, of Phelan, two weeks ago.
Incident Overview: The accident occurred at approximately 8:15 pm, on April 14, 2024, just east of Tumbleweed Road. It involved a white 2018 GMC Yukon driven by an Oak Hills woman traveling eastbound with her child and a blue 2015 Subaru Forester driven by Tommy Solis traveling westbound. According to California Highway Patrol officials, the Yukon veered across the left turn lane from the eastbound into the westbound lane, directly into the path of the Subaru, leading to the fatal impact.
San Bernardino County firefighter-paramedics pronounced Solis dead at the scene. The young child passenger of the Yukon was taken to a trauma center with survivable injuries, while the mother, who was the driver of the Yukon, was airlifted to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Her identity has not yet been disclosed.
Legal and Safety Considerations: The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, with a focus on why the Yukon crossed into oncoming traffic. At first glance, it may seem that the crash was caused by a lapse in concentration or some other human error. However, there is also a possibility that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to a manufacturing defect or other mechanical issue.
