Hendricks County, Indiana (February 18, 2026) — A 64-year-old man was killed Wednesday in a multi-vehicle crash at a busy Hendricks County intersection, according to authorities.
The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as Terry Schultz. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies were dispatched around noon to U.S. 36 at County Road 525 East on reports of a crash.
Incident Details: According to the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office, the crash involved a semi-truck, a Chevrolet, and a Chrysler at the intersection of U.S. 36 and County Road 525 East. Authorities stated that the initial impact involved the semi-truck and the Chevrolet. The force of that collision caused the Chevrolet to then strike a Chrysler that was stopped in the left-turn lane, traveling westbound on U.S. 36.
Terry Schultz was an occupant of the Chevrolet. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other individuals involved in the crash were transported to an area hospital.
Indiana State Police assisted with the investigation, and crash reconstruction specialists responded to analyze vehicle positioning and impact points. The intersection was partially closed while authorities conducted their investigation.
Officials stated that it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.
Law enforcement confirmed that Indiana State Police detained one of the drivers involved in the crash on behalf of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Federal authorities later confirmed that ICE had taken the individual into custody. No additional details about potential criminal charges related to the crash have been released.
Investigation: The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the collision.
In intersection crashes along major corridors like U.S. 36, investigators typically examine vehicle speed, lane positioning, right-of-way compliance, and traffic signal timing. Crash reconstruction specialists will likely review skid marks, debris patterns, and impact points to determine the sequence of events.
If a vehicle was turning or crossing traffic, determining whether proper yielding occurred will be central to the findings. Authorities may also review any available surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras.
At this time, officials have not publicly announced whether any citations or formal charges stemming directly from the crash have been filed. The investigation remains active.
Legal Considerations: Multi-vehicle intersection crashes, especially those involving semi-trucks, often require complex liability determinations. Civil claims, if pursued, may depend on whether any driver failed to obey traffic signals, yield appropriately, or operate their vehicle with reasonable care. As investigators continue their work, the findings will determine whether additional legal action follows.
Pending the investigation’s findings, the Schultz family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to address funeral expenses and other losses associated with the death.
During this difficult time, I offer my deepest condolences to Terry Schultz’s family and loved ones.
