Bakersfield, CA (September 29, 2024) – The Kern County Coroner has identified 16-year-old Ulicer Alesander Perez Jimenes of Lamont as the driver who tragically lost his life in a vehicle crash into a canal in Bakersfield on September 29, 2024
Accident Details: The incident occurred around 1:10 a.m. on Cottonwood Road, south of Panama Lane. According to an initial California Highway Patrol (CHP) investigation, Jimenes was driving a 2014 Toyota southbound on Cottonwood Road when his vehicle veered off the road for reasons still under investigation. The car traveled southwestern and plunged into a canal, becoming fully submerged.
Two passengers, a 19-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man, managed to escape the vehicle. Tragically, Jimenes was unable to get out, and emergency responders pronounced him deceased at the scene. The coroner’s report confirmed that Jimenes drowned, and his death was ruled accidental.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. An in-depth investigation by accident reconstruction experts may help clarify the sequence of events and determine whether any third-party negligence played a part in this devastating loss.
- Road Conditions: This heartbreaking accident raises questions about the roadway’s conditions and whether any environmental or mechanical factors contributed to the vehicle veering off course. Road hazards such as inadequate lighting, poor signage, or a lack of guardrails near canals can increase the risk of such incidents. If these or other preventable hazards played a role, government entities or property owners responsible for the area might share liability.
- Mechanical Malfunction: It is crucial to examine whether mechanical defects contributed to the crash. Defects, such as faulty brakes or steering issues, can cause an accident.
If evidence of negligence is discovered, the family of the deceased or the injured passengers may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Compensation could help cover funeral costs, emotional distress, and other damages arising from the incident.
My deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of Ulicer Alesander Perez Jimenes during this challenging time. The loss of someone so young is an unimaginable tragedy, and my thoughts are with all who are mourning this loss.
