Bakersfield, CA (May 10, 2025) — A man was killed Friday night after being struck by two vehicles while crossing a street in East Bakersfield, and one of the drivers has been arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
Incident Details: The fatal collision occurred around 8:53 p.m. on May 9 in the 700 block of East California Avenue. Police say the pedestrian, an adult male, was crossing the road outside of a marked crosswalk when he was first struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound. After the initial impact, the man was then struck by a second eastbound vehicle. Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Both drivers involved remained at the scene. After evaluating the first driver, police determined he was under the influence of alcohol and placed him under arrest. Authorities stated that speed was not a contributing factor, and the investigation is ongoing.
Once the next of kin are notified, the Kern County Coroner’s Office will release the deceased’s identity.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: While the investigation is ongoing, authorities will also assess lighting, road conditions, and visibility to determine whether other contributing factors were involved.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, the victim’s family may have grounds for a wrongful death claim, which could provide compensation for funeral expenses, emotional distress, and loss of companionship.
I extend my condolences to the victim’s family during this difficult time.
