South Dakota Man Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run of Pedestrian in Kansas

Manhattan, KS (May 16, 2025) — A 32-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident early Thursday morning in Manhattan, and authorities have arrested the semi-truck driver believed to be responsible.

Incident Details: Officers from the Riley County Police Department (RCPD) responded to the 700 block of S. 4th Street shortly before 5:45 a.m. on May 15 after receiving reports of a fatal crash involving a pedestrian. The victim, a 32-year-old male whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation by RCPD led authorities to identify Shane Jungemann, a 48-year-old man from Jefferson City, South Dakota, as the driver of the semi-truck involved in the collision. Authorities allege Jungemann fled the scene and failed to report the crash.

He was arrested later that evening around 9:00 p.m. at a location on S. Seth Child Road in Manhattan. Jungemann was booked into the Riley County Jail and is currently being held on a $15,000 bond for failure to report an accident involving a fatality.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: The investigation is ongoing, and RCPD has not yet released whether additional charges, such as vehicular manslaughter or reckless driving, may follow. Authorities will examine if other factors contributed to the accident, including road conditions, weather, or mechanical issues with the vehicle.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the victim’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, seeking compensation for funeral costs, emotional suffering, and other damages.
