Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Outside Sherman Oaks Hospital; Police Seek Tesla Driver

Sherman Oaks, CA (October 19, 2025) – A man was killed in a hit-and-run early Sunday outside Sherman Oaks Hospital, and police are searching for the driver of a black Tesla Model Y.

Accident Details: The collision happened just after midnight on Van Nuys Boulevard between Huston and Addison streets. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the victim had been dropped off at the hospital for a mental health emergency and then ran into the roadway, where he was struck by a southbound Tesla Model Y. The driver fled the scene. The victim, described as a 62-year-old man from Ventura County, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released pending notification of family. Investigators asked anyone with information to come forward.

Investigation: Detectives are reviewing nearby security cameras and attempting to locate additional witnesses to identify the Tesla and its driver. The inquiry will focus on vehicle trajectory, speed, and lighting conditions along Van Nuys Boulevard at the time of impact. Investigators will also coordinate with the hospital to determine any relevant timeline information preceding the crash. Leaving the scene of a fatal collision is a felony under California law; once identified, the driver could face significant criminal charges in addition to civil exposure.

Legal Considerations: Families affected by fatal hit-and-run crashes may pursue wrongful death claims that seek compensation for funeral costs, loss of financial support, and emotional harm. Parallel civil claims can proceed even while a criminal case is pending, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may provide interim benefits where applicable. Prompt preservation of evidence—video footage, 911 audio, and witness accounts—often proves critical in establishing liability and damages.

My deepest condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones as they process this devastating loss.
