Two Injured After Semi-Truck Slams Into Comfort Inn in Shelby, NC

Shelby, NC (May 30, 2025) – A tractor-trailer barreled into a Comfort Inn off U.S. 74 early Friday morning, injuring two people and causing major disruptions near East Dixon Boulevard and East Marion Street, according to local law enforcement.

Accident Details: Shelby Police say the crash occurred shortly before 5 a.m. when a westbound semi-truck ran a red light at the intersection of East Marion Street and Dixon Boulevard. The truck collided with two vehicles before veering off the road and slamming into the front of the Comfort Inn hotel. Its cargo—lumber—spilled across the property and nearby lanes.

Two people from the passenger vehicles were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver was unharmed. Authorities confirmed that no hotel guests were injured, although the crash prompted an evacuation due to building damage and the threat of fire.

Photos and reports from the scene showed the truck’s cab embedded into the hotel’s exterior wall, with debris scattered across the area. Hotel patrons described the crash as sounding “like a bomb went off.”

Legal Considerations: Crashes involving commercial trucks often raise questions of driver error, hours-of-service violations, or maintenance issues. In this case, running a red light may indicate negligence or distraction. Those injured could pursue a personal injury claim if the investigation confirms fault on the truck driver’s part or the trucking company’s oversight.

When a truck causes structural damage to a business, the property owner may also have grounds for a claim against the trucking company for repairs, lost business, and displacement costs.

Ongoing Investigation: Authorities have not confirmed why the semi failed to stop at the red light. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine whether speed, distraction, or a mechanical failure played a role.

Traffic around Cleveland Mall remained slow into the morning while crews worked to clear the wreckage and spilled cargo. One northbound lane of Dixon Boulevard was temporarily closed.

I hope those injured recover quickly and commend emergency responders for managing a chaotic scene without further harm.
