CRESCENT JUNCTION, UT (July 6, 2025) – A semi-truck driver was killed Sunday night in a crash on Interstate 70 after another truck made an illegal maneuver near Crescent Junction, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. near milepost 181 on eastbound I-70. Authorities say the driver of a 2024 Freightliner exited at a scenic overlook and then attempted to re-enter the highway by cutting across the gore area—a section of roadway between the exit ramp and the freeway that is marked as off-limits.
As the 2024 Freightliner pulled back onto the highway, a 2015 Freightliner hauling a trailer struck the rear of its trailer. The impact killed the driver of the 2015 Freightliner at the scene.
The trailer of the 2024 Freightliner, which was carrying blueberries, was destroyed. The 2015 Freightliner sustained severe front-end damage. The driver and passenger in the 2024 Freightliner were not injured.
Cleanup and investigation efforts closed the eastbound lanes of I-70 for five to six hours. Traffic was rerouted through a nearby rest area.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Grand County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the incident to determine whether charges will be filed. In trucking accidents involving illegal maneuvers, investigators often review dashcam footage, witness statements, and the placement of road markings to establish fault.
Commercial drivers are required to follow strict safety guidelines, including compliance with road signage and restricted areas. Maneuvers across gore points or other non-designated reentry zones can lead to fatal crashes, as happened in this case.
