Samuel Ocegueda, 28, Intentionally Struck and Killed on Newport Avenue in Long Beach; Suspect Arrested

Long Beach, California (December 7, 2025) — Authorities say Samuel Ocegueda, 28, of Long Beach, was intentionally struck and killed early Sunday morning following an argument with another man who then used his vehicle to run him over. The fatal incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. in the 1700 block of Newport Avenue.

Incident Details: Long Beach police responded after reports of an unconscious man lying in the roadway. Ocegueda was found with fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Long Beach Police Department, Ocegueda and the suspect had engaged in a verbal dispute shortly before the collision. After the argument, Ocegueda crossed Newport Avenue outside of a crosswalk. While he was in the roadway, the suspect allegedly accelerated and intentionally struck him with his vehicle.

Instead of stopping to render aid, the driver fled southbound on Newport Avenue before turning onto Wilton Street. A few hours later, police located and arrested Isai Solis, 28, of Lynwood, in the 12400 block of Santa Fe Avenue. Solis was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held on $2 million bail.

Investigation: The Long Beach Police Department’s Homicide Detail is leading the investigation, given the intentional nature of the collision. Detectives will be reviewing forensic evidence from the vehicle, roadway impact marks, witness statements, and nearby surveillance footage to determine the sequence of events, including the severity and intent behind the vehicle’s acceleration.

In cases alleging intentional vehicular homicide, investigators look at motive, the dynamics of the preceding dispute, driver behavior before and after impact, and any attempts to flee or conceal evidence. They may also analyze phone records, text messages, and possible prior interactions between the parties.

The goal of a homicide investigation in a vehicular context is to develop a complete and accurate account of both the confrontation and the deliberate use of the vehicle as a weapon, a level of detail that is essential not only for prosecution but also for the victim’s family seeking answers.

Legal Considerations: Intentional vehicle strikes are treated under California law not as traffic collisions but as acts of violent crime. If investigators confirm that Solis deliberately used his vehicle to hit Ocegueda, he could face criminal charges, including murder, which carries severe prison penalties.

For Ocegueda’s family, the loss is profound. A sudden death caused by another person’s deliberate actions leaves emotional and psychological wounds that extend far beyond the scene itself. While the criminal case will determine Solis’s accountability to the state, Ocegueda’s family may also pursue a wrongful death claim to seek financial compensation for funeral expenses, the loss of his companionship, and the trauma of losing him in such a violent way. Civil claims can never undo the harm, but they can provide a measure of stability as loved ones begin to navigate life without him.

My deepest condolences go out to the Ocegueda family and friends as they confront this devastating loss.
