SALIDA, CA (July 11, 2025) – A 67-year-old man from Salida was killed early Thursday morning in a hit-and-run crash involving a DUI suspect, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Accident Details: The collision occurred just after 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Covert Road and Toomes Road in Stanislaus County. Authorities say a sedan was struck by another vehicle and forced off the road into a nearby field. The driver of the sedan died at the scene.
CHP investigators later located the other vehicle involved about a mile away from the crash site. Officers arrested 20-year-old Luis Mercado-Ulloa of Modesto, who they believe ran a stop sign before crashing into the victim’s car and fleeing the scene.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Mercado-Ulloa faces multiple charges, including felony DUI, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter. In California, leaving the scene of a fatal crash and driving under the influence carry severe legal penalties, both criminal and civil.
Families affected by wrongful death crashes may also pursue civil claims for compensation related to funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and other damages. DUI-related crashes often involve additional legal consequences due to the reckless nature of the conduct.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the Salida resident who lost their life in this tragic event.
