Russell Losser Killed in 3-Vehicle Crash on I-77 in Surry County

Surry County, NC (April 1, 2025) – A 51-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 77 near mile marker 86 in Surry County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Incident Details: The crash occurred around 8:20 a.m. when a 2024 white Volvo tractor-trailer was stopped in the southbound left lane for traffic ahead. A 2017 white Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Russell Losser, rear-ended the semi-truck. A 2021 purple Honda CR-V then rear-ended the Equinox. Losser died at the scene. His passenger and the CR-V driver were both transported to the hospital with injuries. The semi-truck driver was uninjured. Officials noted that Losser was not wearing a seatbelt. The roadway was closed for approximately two hours during the investigation.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Troopers are continuing to review the sequence of collisions, including visibility, following distance, and vehicle speed. Investigators may also look into whether seatbelt use could have altered the outcome. For surviving victims, potential personal injury claims may hinge on identifying any negligence among the drivers involved.
