Surry County, NC (April 1, 2025) – A 51-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 77 near mile marker 86 in Surry County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Incident Details: The crash occurred around 8:20 a.m. when a 2024 white Volvo tractor-trailer was stopped in the southbound left lane for traffic ahead. A 2017 white Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Russell Losser, rear-ended the semi-truck. A 2021 purple Honda CR-V then rear-ended the Equinox. Losser died at the scene. His passenger and the CR-V driver were both transported to the hospital with injuries. The semi-truck driver was uninjured. Officials noted that Losser was not wearing a seatbelt. The roadway was closed for approximately two hours during the investigation.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Troopers are continuing to review the sequence of collisions, including visibility, following distance, and vehicle speed. Investigators may also look into whether seatbelt use could have altered the outcome.
