Cathedral City, CA (January 31, 2025) – A hit-and-run crash in Cathedral City has claimed the life of 52-year-old Ruben Mijarez.
Accident Details: The collision occurred on Friday, January 31, 2025, at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Ramon Road, west of Landau Boulevard. According to the Cathedral City Police Department, Mijarez was found conscious in the eastbound lanes of Ramon Road on the bridge. He informed officers that a vehicle had struck him while crossing the roadway. The driver fled the scene.
Mijarez was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs but, because of his severe injuries, was moved to Loma Linda University Medical Center. He succumbed to those injuries on Monday, February 10, 2025.
Investigation: Investigators will analyze traffic camera footage, nearby surveillance video, and physical evidence, such as vehicle debris and tire marks, to reconstruct the crash. At the time of the accident, no witnesses were identified. However, witness statements will be crucial in identifying the suspect vehicle and what happened. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact them.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. When a hit-and-run driver fails to provide aid or notify authorities, they breach their duty, which requires motorists to remain at the scene of an accident. Further, drivers must exercise caution, especially when approaching crosswalks and other areas where pedestrians are likely present.
A breach of these duties may amount to negligence if the investigation connects the breach to the injuries sustained. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, families of the deceased may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit. This type of claim can compensate for funeral costs, loss of companionship, and emotional suffering.
I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ruben Mijarez during this heartbreaking time.
