Redding, CA (August 7, 2025) — A pedestrian was killed Thursday night after being struck by a driver suspected of being under the influence of drugs along Highway 273 near South Bonnyview Road.
Incident Details: According to Redding police, the collision occurred around 9 p.m. when a southbound white Dodge minivan hit a pedestrian in the roadway. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. The southbound lanes of Highway 273 were closed during the investigation, but have since reopened. Authorities have not yet released the names of either the driver or the victim pending further notifications.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The ongoing investigation will involve authorities examining roadway conditions and lighting. Potential witness accounts will also be important in determining liability.
In addition to criminal liability, the victim’s family may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim to recover damages for funeral expenses, loss of support, and other losses.
