Pedestrian Sandra Mushegan Killed in Santa Maria Hit-and-Run

Santa Maria, CA (August 1, 2024) – On August 1, 2024, an 82-year-old woman named Sandra Mushegan was tragically struck by a vehicle in a shopping center parking lot on the 1600 block of North Broadway.

Accident Details: Mushegan was reportedly walking out of a store shortly before 3:30 p.m. when she was hit. The driver fled the scene, and Mushegan was severely injured. Despite receiving medical care, Mushegan succumbed to her injuries five days later.

Investigation:  Police seized the vehicle involved in the collision after finding it abandoned in a nearby parking lot. An extensive investigation by the Santa Maria Police Department ultimately led to the arrest of 36-year-old Francisco Alvarez Bravo, who was located and taken into custody on Friday, September 27, 2024. Bravo has been arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in death.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. In addition to criminal charges, Bravo could face civil liability for his actions. Mushegan’s family may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim against him. A wrongful death lawsuit allows the family of a victim to seek compensation when someone else’s negligence or wrongdoing causes the loss of a loved one. This type of claim may cover damages such as funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and other financial burdens caused by the sudden and tragic loss.

Other Considerations: Investigators should also examine whether other factors contributed to the accident, such as Bravo’s speed in the parking lot or any obstructions that could have impaired his view. In parking lot accidents, the layout, signage, and pedestrian pathways can also play a role in determining liability.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Sandra Mushegan during this incredibly difficult time. Losing a loved one in such a sudden and tragic way is unimaginable, and I hope they find strength and support in their pursuit of justice.
