San Francisco, CA (May 27, 2025) – A pedestrian died after being hit by a driver early Tuesday morning near the Costco located in San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
Accident Details: Emergency responders were dispatched to the intersection of 10th and Harrison streets around 5:14 a.m. on May 27. Officers arrived to find a pedestrian with life-threatening injuries. Medical personnel performed emergency aid and transported the individual to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
The driver involved remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Police have not yet released the identity of the victim or stated whether speed or distraction played a role.
The crash forced the closure of 10th Street between Folsom and Bryant for several hours during the morning commute. According to the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management, the street reopened at 9:21 a.m., although closures remained along Howard and Harrison streets from Ninth to 11th Streets while investigators completed their work.
Legal Considerations: In fatal pedestrian crashes, officials will assess whether the driver yielded properly, the timing of traffic signals, and other potential contributing factors. If the investigation determines negligence on the part of the driver, surviving family members may consider a wrongful death claim.
Pedestrian fatalities in intersections—especially in densely populated areas like SoMa—often prompt further scrutiny regarding traffic control measures and visibility.
Ongoing Investigation: The San Francisco Police Department’s Traffic Collision Investigation Unit is leading the case. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active.
I extend sincere condolences to the family and hope this tragedy spurs meaningful safety improvements in the city’s high-risk intersections.
