Pedestrian Karen Conway Killed in Alameda Collision

Alameda, CA (January 15, 2025) – On the evening of Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Karen Conway, a 59-year-old Alameda resident, tragically lost her life after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway.

Accident Details: According to the Alameda Police Department, the incident occurred just before 6:30 p.m. Preliminary investigations reveal that Conway was crossing the street when a 70-year-old man, also an Alameda resident, struck her while making a westbound turn. She suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital, where she later died. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Pedestrian collisions raise several legal questions, including whether the driver exercised due care and whether roadway design or visibility may have played a role. California law mandates that drivers yield the right of way to pedestrians crossing within marked or unmarked crosswalks. Additionally, factors such as road conditions, adequate lighting, traffic signals, and the driver’s attention at the time of the collision will be evaluated. The police have stated the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Conway’s family may have grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit, depending on the investigation’s findings. In California, wrongful death claims are filed when someone dies as a result of another party’s negligence, recklessness, or intentional misconduct. If it is determined that another party’s negligence caused the crash, Conway’s family may be able to recover funeral expenses, lost earnings, loss of companionship, and emotional distress.

I extend my sincerest condolences to Karen Conway’s family and friends during this heartbreaking time.
