Pedestrian Fatality in Oildale Claims the Life of Ronald Thomas Steele

Oildale, CA (November 13, 2024) – On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, a tragic incident in Oildale killed 39-year-old Ronald Thomas Steele.

Accident Details: The accident occurred on China Grade Loop, west of Bedford Way. According to the Kern County Coroner’s Office and initial California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports, Steele walked outside a designated crosswalk and into the path of a westbound Toyota. Steele was struck and killed. The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. While preliminary investigations suggest that Steele’s failure to use a crosswalk contributed to the incident, a comprehensive review of the circumstances is crucial to determine any additional factors that may have played a role in this tragic event.

  • Driver’s Duty of Care: Drivers are legally responsible for exercising reasonable caution, especially in areas where pedestrians are likely to be present. Although Steele was outside the crosswalk, investigators will evaluate whether the driver observed the speed limit, avoided distractions, and drove safely for the conditions at that time.
  • Roadway Design and Lighting: Accidents involving pedestrians raise questions about roadway design and lighting adequacy. Was the crosswalk positioned conveniently for pedestrian use and sufficiently marked? Could poor visibility or inadequate street lighting have contributed to the driver’s inability to see Steele in time to react?
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Investigators may review the condition of the Toyota involved to rule out any mechanical failures, such as brake or headlight issues, that could have affected the driver’s response.

Wrongful Death Claim: The death of Ronald Steele is a devastating loss to his loved ones, and they may seek answers. Depending on the findings, his family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against negligent parties who caused his death. This claim would compensate them for their loss, including funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional distress.

Comparative Negligence Law: California law requires pedestrians to use crosswalks when available. If Steele is found negligent for stepping outside the crosswalk, his family can still recover compensation. However, it may be reduced per California comparative negligence laws.

I offer my deepest sympathies to Steele’s family and friends as they navigate this heartbreaking time.
