Merced, CA (May 14, 2025) — A head-on collision on Highway 165, north of Santa Fe Grade, left one driver dead and two others injured Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol. Investigators believe alcohol or drugs may have contributed to the deadly crash.
Incident Details: The collision occurred when a red 2005 Toyota Corolla, traveling northbound, collided head-on with a black 2022 Toyota Corolla heading southbound. The impact caused the red Corolla to overturn into a nearby canal, where its driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the red vehicle sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the black Corolla suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: CHP is investigating the crash as a potential DUI-related incident, and toxicology reports will likely determine whether impairment played a role.
The injured parties may be entitled to pursue personal injury claims, while the family of the deceased driver may also pursue wrongful death litigation, depending on the findings of the investigation. Damages in such cases may include medical costs, lost income, emotional distress, and funeral expenses.
I extend my condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and hope for a full recovery for those injured.
