Bakersfield, CA (May 10, 2025) — A two-vehicle crash near the Valley Plaza Mall on Saturday night left one man dead and two others injured, according to the Bakersfield Police Department (BPD). The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Hughes Lane and Holden Way around 8:50 p.m..
Incident Details: Police say a southbound SUV attempted to make a left turn onto Holden Way, crossing into the path of a northbound vehicle on Hughes Lane. The two vehicles collided in a broadside crash, with the front of the northbound car striking the side of the SUV. The force of the impact caused the SUV to overturn, ejecting one of its occupants.
Responding officers found a man pinned beneath the overturned SUV, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A second man, identified as a passenger in the SUV, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to a separate hospital with moderate injuries.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Bakersfield Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, acknowledging that speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash, but toxicology reports are pending to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role. Authorities will likely assess whether failure to yield, driver distraction, or impaired driving contributed to the fatal crash.
