Hayward, CA (February 14, 2026) – Olga Figueroa Hernandez (56) was killed, and her grandson (6) was injured when they were struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk in Hayward.
Incident Details: On February 14, 2026, around 6:20 p.m., Olga Figueroa Hernandez and her 6-year-old grandson were walking together in a crosswalk near the intersection of West Tennyson Road and Baldwin Street in Hayward.
A vehicle struck Hernandez and her grandson in the crosswalk. They were transported to a hospital. Hernandez died from her injuries. The grandson suffered severe facial fractures and has been released from the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrians is a 60-year-old Hayward resident and has not yet been identified. The driver remained at the scene and was cooperative, providing a statement about the collision.
Authorities have ruled out drugs or alcohol as factors in the accident.
Investigation: Authorities in Hayward are continuing to investigate the fatal pedestrian crash near West Tennyson Road and Baldwin Street. Because Olga Figueroa Hernandez and her grandson were reportedly in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision, investigators will closely examine right-of-way issues, traffic signals, lighting conditions, and the vehicle’s speed leading up to the impact.
Law enforcement will also likely review surveillance footage, witness statements, and physical evidence from the scene to determine whether the driver had sufficient time to see and stop for the pedestrians.
Although drugs and alcohol have been ruled out, officials will still evaluate whether distraction, inattention, or other driving factors contributed to the crash.
Legal Considerations: Under California law, drivers are required to yield to pedestrians who are lawfully within a marked crosswalk. Even if impairment is not involved, a driver may still be held civilly responsible if they failed to exercise reasonable care.
If investigators determine the driver did not properly yield or was otherwise negligent, Hernandez’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and the loss of companionship and care.
Her grandson may also have a personal injury claim to recover damages related to his medical treatment, pain and suffering, and any long-term effects of his injuries.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Olga Figueroa Hernandez, and we wish her grandson strength and healing as he recovers from this traumatic event.
