Sacramento, CA (December 13, 2025) – The UC Davis Health Department has identified Novyrose Mejia as the nurse who was hit by a car outside the Sacramento VA Medical Center on Saturday.
Accident Details: According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), the victim was struck by a car that was pulling into the emergency room parking lot.
The SCSO reported that Mejia then fell and hit her head on the ground. She was taken to the VA’s emergency room and was then transferred to UC Davis Medical Center. The SCSO was notified that Mejia died on Monday.
Investigation: The SCSO is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision outside the Sacramento VA Medical Center.
Investigators will examine how the vehicle was entering the emergency room parking lot at the time Novyrose Mejia was struck, and whether the driver exercised appropriate caution in an area with frequent pedestrian traffic.
Authorities are expected to identify the driver involved and review that individual’s actions before and after the collision. Investigators will also review physical evidence from the scene, including vehicle damage and the location of the impact, as well as any available surveillance footage from the medical center. Visibility, lighting conditions, traffic flow, and whether the driver was traveling at a safe speed while entering the parking area will also be considered. These findings will help establish a clear timeline and determine whether any traffic laws or safety rules were violated.
Legal Considerations: Under California law, drivers are required to use heightened care in parking lots and medical facility areas, where pedestrians are commonly present and may have the right of way.
If the investigation determines that the driver failed to maintain a proper lookout, drove too fast for the conditions, or otherwise acted negligently, civil liability may be applicable.
For Novyrose Mejia’s family and community, this loss is heartbreaking.
