Westbrook, Connecticut (September 5, 2025) — Two people were killed Friday morning in separate crashes on Interstate 95 in Westbrook that involved tractor-trailers and scattered debris across the highway, according to state police.
Incident Details: The first crash happened around 7:42 a.m. on I-95 South near exit 64, when a tractor-trailer lost its load of plywood, scattering debris across both sides of the interstate. A 39-year-old man, identified as Nicholas Kupec of Waterford, sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Three other people were also transported to area hospitals with injuries.
At approximately 9:27 a.m., a second collision occurred on I-95 South near exit 65, involving a car and a tractor-trailer. Troopers said 22-year-old Isabella Butzgy of Montville was pronounced dead at the scene. Video from the area showed three vehicles with significant damage.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Both crashes remain under investigation by Connecticut State Police. Investigators will review whether mechanical failures, load securement violations, or driver negligence contributed to the collisions. Crashes involving tractor-trailers often raise questions of trucking company liability, federal safety compliance, and roadway safety conditions. Families of victims like Kupec and Butzgy may pursue wrongful death claims to recover damages for funeral costs, lost income, and emotional suffering.
Interstate 95 is one of the busiest highways in the United States, and crashes involving trucks along this corridor often create widespread disruption. The heavy flow of commuter traffic combined with long-haul trucking makes the risk of collisions significant. When accidents occur, they can shut down lanes for hours, stranding motorists and delaying commercial shipments. Emergency responders work quickly to treat the injured, manage traffic, and clear debris, but investigations may take days. Truck accidents on I-95 serve as a reminder of the importance of caution, patience, and vigilance on one of America’s most traveled roadways.
I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of Nicholas Kupec and Isabella Butzgy during this heartbreaking time.
