Des Plaines, IL (June 1, 2025) — A 49-year-old woman has died from injuries sustained in a crash involving a passenger car and a semi-truck late Sunday night on Algonquin Road near Friendship Park.
Incident Details: According to Des Plaines police, the collision occurred at approximately 11:54 p.m. near the intersection of Algonquin Road and Leslie Lane. Officers arrived to find a female passenger in a Toyota Prius, identified as Nazly Rodriguez-Munoz, bleeding heavily from a leg wound. Officers applied a tourniquet to stabilize her, and Des Plaines Fire Department paramedics transported her to a local hospital. Tragically, she later died from her injuries.
Preliminary reports indicate the Prius was being driven eastbound by 28-year-old Giovanna Rodriguez-Fuentes when it struck the rear of a Volvo semi-truck. Rodriguez-Fuentes told investigators that the semi was parked along the south side of the road with its lights off. The semi driver, however, stated he had been driving eastbound at a slow speed at the time of impact.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The collision is currently under active investigation. Authorities will evaluate factors such as driver distraction, visibility, lighting, speed, and following distance to determine their potential role in the accident. They will also review evidence from the scene, including vehicle data recorders, lighting conditions, dashcam footage, and witness statements, to clarify what happened.
Depending on the results of the investigation, the family of Rodriguez-Munoz may have grounds for a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, and the emotional loss of their loved one.
My condolences go out to the family and friends of Ms. Rodriguez-Munoz.
