Los Angeles, CA (June 19, 2025) — A 9-year-old boy was killed and his 19-year-old brother hospitalized Thursday night after an RV struck them while they were riding an e-scooter in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles. The RV’s driver, 46-year-old Jimmy Pittman, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Incident Details: The crash occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of South New Hampshire Avenue and 4th Street. According to police, the two brothers were on an e-scooter when the RV made a turn and struck them both. Nadir Gavarreta, the younger sibling, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 19-year-old brother was transported to the hospital and remains in stable condition.
Witnesses reported that the RV was speeding through the neighborhood moments before the crash. One witness recalled shouting at the driver to slow down just seconds before the collision occurred. Pittman, who reportedly took a breathalyzer test at the scene, was later booked on DUI charges by the Los Angeles Police Department.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: While Pittman has been charged with DUI, he may face other charges, including vehicular manslaughter, as the LAPD continues its investigation. Authorities will examine if other factors, such as vehicle malfunction, contributed to the crash.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, the surviving brother and the family of Nadir Gavarreta may pursue personal injury and wrongful death claims to cover medical bills, funeral costs, and emotional trauma.
My deepest condolences go out to the Gavarreta family, and I hope for continued healing for Nadir’s brother.
