Motorcyclist Critically Injured After Collision with Semi on Emerson Avenue in Indianapolis

Indianapolis, IN (August 13, 2025) – A motorcyclist was critically injured in a collision with a semi-truck on the east side of Indianapolis.

Accident Details: The crash occurred around 9:40 p.m. in the 2600 block of North Emerson Avenue, near Interstate 70. Investigators say the motorcyclist was traveling southbound when the motorcycle collided with a semi-truck attempting to make a turn.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), the semi driver first attempted to turn into a gas station. When the driver saw that it was closed, they attempted a U-turn. During that maneuver, the motorcycle struck the semi’s trailer.

The motorcyclist was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. The semi driver told police they had not seen the motorcyclist before the collision. As required by state law in crashes involving serious injury, the truck driver was taken to the hospital for a blood draw.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Several legal issues will be critical in determining liability in this crash:

  • Was the U-turn the semi driver attempted legal?
  • Who had the right of way?
  • Why didn’t the semi driver see the motorcycle?
  • Was there adequate street lighting?
  • Did impairment, distraction, or fatigue play a role?

Investigators will examine dash cam footage, take witness statements, and review any traffic footage to reconstruct the accident.

My thoughts are with the injured motorcyclist and their loved ones during this time.
