Multi-Vehicle Crash Injures Seven On I-10 In Monterey Park, All Eastbound Lanes Temporarily Stopped

Monterey Park, CA (September 28, 2025) — A multi-vehicle crash injured seven people, four of whom were in critical condition, on the eastbound 10 Freeway at S. Garfield Avenue early Sunday, authorities said. California Highway Patrol reported the collision at about 5:50 a.m. Officers arrived to find at least two cars—a gray Kia and a white Mazda—had collided, causing one vehicle to roll over and bringing all eastbound traffic to a stop.

Accident Details: CHP said the impact led to a rollover and a full traffic stoppage in the eastbound lanes. A SigAlert was issued for all eastbound lanes around 6:16 a.m. as crews assessed damage and cleared debris. Lanes reopened roughly an hour later after responders ensured the scene was safe.

Injuries and Response: Four patients were transported in critical condition. Two additional patients with minor injuries were also taken to a hospital, while a seventh person declined transport, according to CHP. Authorities had not identified the victims as of 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Traffic and Community Impact: The freeway closure produced significant early-morning delays through Monterey Park and surrounding corridors as traffic was held and later funneled through reopened lanes. The quick clearance following the SigAlert reduced the duration of backups compared to typical peak-hour incidents.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: The cause of the crash remains under investigation. CHP is expected to review vehicle movements, possible pre-impact braking, weather and lighting conditions at dawn, and any potential impairment or distraction indicators. When a rollover and multiple critical injuries occur, investigators typically prioritize reconstruction to determine sequencing and fault. Motorists were urged to drive cautiously as daylight and traffic volumes increased following the incident.
