Idaho County, ID (May 4, 2025) — A 54-year-old woman from Middleton was killed Saturday morning in a head-on collision involving a box truck and an SUV on U.S. Highway 12, according to the Idaho State Police.
Incident Details: The crash occurred around 11:58 a.m. on May 3 near milepost 161, approximately one mile west of Lochsa Lodge. Investigators say a 60-year-old man from Des Moines, Washington, was driving an eastbound 2021 International box truck when he crossed the double yellow line while navigating a right-hand curve. The truck collided with a 2023 Hyundai Palisade traveling westbound, driven by a 59-year-old man from Middleton.
A female passenger in the back seat of the Hyundai, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency crews, including an air ambulance, responded to assist the injured. Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Idaho State Police are still investigating the cause of the crash. They will assess whether driver error, speed, road conditions, or mechanical issues contributed to the box truck crossing into oncoming traffic.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, the surviving occupants of the SUV may be eligible to pursue personal injury claims, and the victim’s family may have grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit. Such claims could compensate for medical costs, funeral expenses, and emotional distress.
