Romeo, MI (June 3, 2025) — A 49-year-old woman from Bruce Township was tragically killed Monday morning in a collision involving a semi-truck and a van on M-53 in northern Macomb County, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
Incident Details: The fatal crash occurred just north of 32 Mile Road on northbound M-53. Authorities say Michelle Castanos was driving a white Chevy Express van when her vehicle became involved in a collision with a semi-truck. Castanos was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi driver was reportedly uninjured, and no other injuries were reported.
The crash prompted a full closure of northbound M-53 for several hours while emergency crews responded and investigators worked to document the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities continue the investigation and will likely review black box data from the semi and traffic surveillance footage to determine if speeding, driver distraction, weather, road conditions, or mechanical failure contributed to the crash.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, Ms. Castanos’ family may have grounds for a wrongful death claim to provide compensation for funeral costs, lost income, emotional suffering, and loss of companionship.
