Michael Pacifico Carrillo Killed While Riding Moped in Moss Landing

Moss Landing, CA (May 15, 2024) — A fatal crash involving a moped and a car occurred early Wednesday morning in Moss Landing, resulting in the death of a moped rider, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The rider was identified as 52-year-old Michael Pacifico Carrillo of Prunedale.

Incident Overview: The accident took place around 5:48 a.m. at the intersection of Castroville Boulevard and Elkhorn Road. A 27-year-old Watsonville man was driving a red Honda Civic eastbound on Castroville Boulevard and was in the process of making a left turn onto northbound Elkhorn Road. Concurrently, Carrillo was traveling westbound on Castroville Boulevard on a red Honda Forza Moped. As the Civic began its left turn, it crossed directly into the path of the approaching moped, leading to a collision. The impact caused Carrillo to be ejected from the moped. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: The CHP has stated that alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash. The investigation will continue to determine the specific circumstances leading up to the collision, including any potential traffic violations or distracted driving behaviors. An important part of the investigation will be whether the driver of the Civic breached their duty of care when the left turn was made. However, based on preliminary information, the family of the deceased could decide to pursue a wrongful death claim for their loss.

My thoughts are with the family and friends of Michael Pacifico Carrillo during this difficult time. I hope the investigation reveals more details about the accident and whether negligence played a role.
