Oakland, CA (February 3, 2025) – Authorities have identified Michael Burawoy, 77, a distinguished sociology professor at UC Berkeley, as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash on Monday evening.
Accident Details: The incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Park View Terrace. According to police, Burawoy was walking inside a marked crosswalk when a dark-colored SUV traveling westbound on Grand Avenue struck him. The impact was severe, reportedly throwing Burawoy about 75 feet. Emergency responders treated him at the scene and transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m.
Investigation: The Oakland Police Department is actively searching for the driver, who fled the scene. Authorities do not currently have a detailed description of the suspect vehicle and have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were factors. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Oakland traffic investigators.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Hit-and-run accidents are serious criminal offenses and also carry significant civil liability. Under California law, drivers involved in accidents are legally required to stop, assist, and report the incident. Fleeing the scene of a fatal collision is a serious crime that may result in both criminal and civil consequences. Also, the driver failed to follow the right-of-way laws as Burawoy was walking inside a marked crosswalk, meaning he had the right-of-way. Investigators will analyze physical evidence to determine how fast the vehicle was moving at the time of the collision. Speeding and failure to follow the right-of-way laws can also be considered negligent acts.
Burawoy’s family may pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault driver if identified. Such a claim could seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional trauma. California’s uninsured motorist coverage may also provide compensation if the driver is not located or lacks insurance.
I extend my condolences to Michael Burawoy’s family, friends, colleagues, and students. I hope the ongoing investigation brings answers and closure for those affected.
