Melvin Joseph Weibel Killed in Dana Point DUI Crash

Dana Point, CA (January 31, 2025) – A fatal DUI-related crash in Dana Point on Friday evening claimed the life of Melvin Joseph Weibel, 88.

Accident Details: The collision occurred around 6:15 p.m. at the intersection of Golden Lantern and Stonehill Drive, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD). Authorities reported that a Land Rover SUV was traveling west on Stonehill Drive when the driver made a left turn against a red arrow. The SUV then collided with an eastbound Ford Transit van. Paramedics pronounced Weibel, a passenger in the van, dead at the scene. The van’s driver sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital.

Investigation: Serene Francie Rosenberg, 48, was the driver of the Land Rover. Rosenberg, a Dana Point resident, has three prior DUI convictions, according to authorities. She was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury and was later booked for murder and DUI causing injury. Investigators are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact the OCSD.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. DUI-related accidents carry severe legal and financial consequences due to the heightened risk they pose to public safety. Rosenberg’s decision to drive impaired and make an illegal turn against a red signal is likely to have both criminal and civil consequences.

In addition to the criminal charges Rosenberg faces, she may also face a wrongful death lawsuit brought by Weibel’s family. This civil claim could seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional suffering.

I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Melvin Joseph Weibel.
