Lauren Sjoblom Fatally Struck by Long Beach Transit Bus

Long Beach, CA (November 26, 2024) – The tragic death of 34-year-old Lauren Sjoblom, who was fatally struck by a Long Beach Transit bus earlier this week, has left a community in mourning.

Accident Details: The collision occurred at approximately 6:55 p.m. at the intersection of Shoreline Drive and Seventh Street. According to a statement from the Long Beach Police Department, the bus was traveling northbound on Shoreline Drive when it struck Sjoblom, who was in the roadway outside a crosswalk.

Emergency responders from the Long Beach Fire Department attempted life-saving measures, but sadly, Sjoblom was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that the bus driver immediately reported the incident and has been cooperating with authorities. Long Beach Transit is assisting in the ongoing investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that speed, distracted driving, and impairment were not contributing factors.

Investigation: The Long Beach Police Department continues to seek information that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding this collision.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. While this incident remains under investigation, several legal questions arise:

  • Liability of the Transit Authority or Driver: Although the preliminary findings suggest no immediate evidence of speed, impairment, or distracted driving, investigators will examine whether the bus driver acted reasonably and whether the transit authority adequately trained and supervised its operators.
  • Road Conditions: Investigators will also examine the road conditions to determine if a defect or hazard contributed to this devastating accident. They may also explore whether the area has sufficient signage and lighting to promote pedestrian safety. If negligence is found, the municipality may be liable.
  • Mechanical Function: The condition of the transit bus should also be examined. If a malfunction contributed to the crash, then the transit company, the bus manufacturer, or the service provider may be implicated in negligence.

California’s wrongful death laws may provide Sjoblom’s family the right to pursue compensation if evidence suggests negligence by any party contributed to this tragedy.   Sjoblom was reportedly outside of a crosswalk at the time of the collision. While this does not necessarily mean her family can’t recover compensation, it may be reduced based on her portion of fault.

I extend my sincerest condolences to Lauren Sjoblom’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
