SUSSEX COUNTY, VA (July 10, 2025) – A tractor-trailer driver was killed Thursday afternoon when another commercial vehicle’s load cover broke loose and struck his windshield, according to Virginia State Police.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 1:45 p.m. on Route 460, also known as General Mahone Highway, in the 5200 block of Sussex County. Authorities say a Freightliner tractor-trailer was heading west when a tarp and metal frame flew off an oncoming eastbound tractor-trailer. The debris hit the driver’s side of the Freightliner’s windshield, causing the driver to lose consciousness.
After the tarp struck the cab, the Freightliner veered out of its lane, crossed the median, and crashed into a wooded area, colliding with several trees.
The driver, identified as 64-year-old Keith Michael Loback of Roanoke, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Virginia State Police are investigating the crash and seeking information about the tractor-trailer that lost its load cover. Authorities have asked anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about the second vehicle to contact them at 804-750-8789 or email questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
Commercial trucking companies have strict obligations to properly secure all equipment and materials on their vehicles. When objects detach from a truck, the results can be deadly, especially when debris strikes other drivers at high speeds. In these cases, investigators typically look at maintenance records, inspection logs, and whether the truck was loaded and secured according to federal safety guidelines.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Keith Michael Loback during this difficult time.
