Juan Lopez Peñuelas Killed in Santa Ana Pedestrian Accident

Santa Ana, CA (January 22, 2025) – A tragic pedestrian accident on Tuesday evening, January 22, 2025, claimed the life of 37-year-old Juan Lopez Peñuelas of San Clemente.

Accident Details: The collision occurred around 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of First Street and Harbor Boulevard in Santa Ana. According to the Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD), Mr. Peñuelas was walking south across First Street when an eastbound vehicle struck him. Emergency responders from the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) treated him at the scene and transported him to a local hospital. Unfortunately, Mr. Peñuelas succumbed to his injuries.

Investigation: The vehicle driver remained at the scene, cooperated with authorities, and showed no signs of alcohol or drug impairment. The Santa Ana Police Department’s Collision Investigations Unit continues to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact the authorities.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. When a pedestrian is fatally injured in a collision, a thorough investigation is necessary to determine potential liability. Investigators will assess whether the driver was operating the vehicle safely, adhering to traffic laws, and maintaining proper awareness of the road. Factors such as visibility, traffic signals, and pedestrian crossing conditions may also play a role in determining responsibility.

Under California law, drivers are required to yield to pedestrians crossing at intersections and take reasonable precautions to prevent accidents. If the investigation finds that the driver was negligent, the family of Mr. Peñuelas may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit

I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Juan Lopez Peñuelas. Losing a loved one under such tragic circumstances is devastating, and I hope his family receives the support they need to heal. A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with funeral expenses. Please contribute if you can.
